Chin Augmentation Surgery chin augmentation surgery

Chin Augmentation surgery is an increasingly comman procedure which is designed to address any imbalances in the natural structure of the chin and face. The issues causing these imbalances are numerous, and include cogenital deficiencies, the effects of ageing or a facial trauma. A qualified surgeon should always discuss your individual requirements with you beforehand, and in the majority of instances will be able to give you an idea of the potential results of chin augmentation (usually through computer imagery).

Chin Augmentation Surgery

During the surgery itself, an implant is placed below the skins surface, just in front of the jaw bone, and is secured into the surrounding tissue by a series of stitches which are designed to avoid any subsequent movement.

The implant is made through a small incision which is usually made underneath the chin, in the crease. Occasionally, the incision can be made through the inside of the mouth, and dissolvable stitches used.

The implants themselves come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and again this is something that would need to be discussed with your surgeon beforehand. Implants tend to be made of either silicone or elastomer.

Following chin augmentation surgery

Following the surgery, you are likely to experience a certain amount of swelling, and though the majority of the swelling will start to subside after 48-72 hours, the area is likely to be tender for several days following the surgery. During this period, the use of cold compresses will reduce the amount of swelling.

The stitches are usually removed 5-10 days following the surgery, and the majority of patients will be able to return to work approximately one to two weeks following the procedure.

Complications of chin augmentation surgery

Problems are rare with chin augmentation surgery, but as with all surgery, there are risks of complications. Extrusion, where the implant works its way up to the skins surface can sometimes occur although this is usually the result of an infection in the area. In this instance, a second procedure is generally required.

Other issues include displacement, where further surgery is required to attach the implant in its correct position. It is also possible that the patient can experience long term numbness in the region, although this usually subsides over time.
