Chemical Peels 

Chemical peels involve the use of a chemical solution to remove the outer layers of the patients skin, leaving a smoother texture on the surface of the individuals skin. Chemical peels are predominantly used for cosmetic purposes, although they can also be used for medical purposes such a decreasing of the effects of facial scarring.

There are a number of different chemical peels available, and they tend to vary on the depth of the chemical peel required. Each of the various peels offer slightly different results, which range from the superficial peels with their minimal recovery periods, up to the deeper chemical peels can offer a deeper, longer lasting more dramatic effect.

Superficial chemical peels can be performed at a clinic or by a specifically trained beauty therapist, however deeper peels are only administered by doctors and surgeons and under anaesthetic.

As with all procedures, chemical peels do carry a degree of risk, and your consultant will go through these in detail with you. They will also give you detailed instructions on caring for your skin following the chemical peel. This is likely to include advice such as ensuring you wear sunblock for a specific period to complications such as developing blotchy skin or uneven complexions.
