Choosing A Cosmetic Surgeon Overseas

Recent years have seen a large increase in the number of cosmetic surgery clinics offering procedures around the world, and such, an increasing number of people are having their surgery performed overseas in countries such as South Africa, Brazil, Argentina and the Czech Republic. In order to help you through the process of choosing a surgeon overseas, we’ve provided a shortlist of considerations for you to consider before making any decision.

Is the plastic surgeon I am using certified?

There are a large number of accreditation agencies throughout the world, which will allow you to research both the clinic and the cosmetic surgeon you are considering using. Feel free to browse through our comprehensive list of global certification boards. Always ask for references and testimonials of patients who have recently had a similar procedure at the clinic.

Is the cosmetic surgery clinic I am considering certified?

Always ask the clinic for information on their accreditation. All good clinics will be happy to provide you with this information.

I am considering cosmetic surgery abroad, will my current insurance cover me?

The majority of insurers will not cover cosmetic procedures outside of the country of residence, and you should always speak with your current insurer before considering any form of surgery overseas. There are a number of insurance companies who do offer this level of cover, and we would strongly recommend you speak with them before you travel.

What about aftercare?

It is recommended that patients stay close to where the surgery was undertaken for a period of 7-10 days, depending on the procedure. With all surgery, you should consult your surgeon beforehand, and discuss your plans for the weeks following the surgery. If you are planning on travelling on to another destination, do speak with them beforehand regarding your requirements and the medical facilities available.

Do the key personnel at the surgeon's office speak your language fluently?

Do ensure that the relevant personnel at the clinic you plan to attend speak your language fluently. It is important that you are able to discuss your condition in detail with the necessary people working with you.

Who are you dealing with?

Do ensure you speak with the appropriate people concerning your procedure, and not a representative of the travel company you may be using.
